The idea that one pet year equals seven human years is a myth. Animals age very quickly in their first year or two, then their aging slows down. The rate also depends on the species and, for dogs, on body size. A single multiplier cannot capture any of that, so we use models that follow the real shape of the aging curve instead.

For dogs and cats we map the first two years month by month, because that period covers a large share of the human equivalent, then apply a yearly factor. For dogs that factor depends on size group.
