Animal Age Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

How pets age, and how many human years equal one year for different animals.

Common questions about how pets age and how many human years equal one year for different animals. For the full reasoning behind our numbers, see our Sources & Methodology, and try the calculator for your own pet.

General

Why isn't 1 pet year equal to 7 human years?+

The idea that one pet year equals seven human years is a myth. Animals age very quickly in their first year or two, then their aging slows down. The rate also depends on the species and, for dogs, on body size. A single multiplier cannot capture any of that, so we use models that follow the real shape of the aging curve instead.

How is my pet's age in human years calculated?+

For dogs and cats we map the first two years month by month, because that period covers a large share of the human equivalent, then apply a yearly factor. For dogs that factor depends on size group. For most other species we use a proportional model based on the typical lifespan of that species. You can read the full breakdown on our Sources and Methodology page.

Can I use this calculator for a mixed breed pet?+

Yes. For a mixed breed dog, choose the adult size group that best matches your pet, such as small, medium, large, or giant. For other animals, pick the closest species or size category. The result will be a sound estimate based on that grouping.

Does this calculator replace a veterinarian?+

No. Our calculator is for general information and education only. For health concerns, lifespan questions, or any age related medical advice, always consult a licensed veterinarian who can examine your pet.

Dogs and cats

How do dogs age compared to humans?+

Dogs age differently depending on size. Small dogs age more slowly and live longer, while large and giant breeds age faster. The first year of a dog's life can equal about 12 to 15 human years, and later years add roughly 4 to 9 human years depending on the size group.

Why do giant dog breeds age so much faster?+

Giant dogs grow extremely quickly, reach adulthood sooner, and have shorter average lifespans. Their rapid early growth and larger body mass contribute to faster aging compared with small and medium breeds.

How do cats age in human years?+

Most cats reach adulthood by around 18 months. The first cat year is about 15 human years, the second adds about 9, and each year after that adds roughly 4 to 5 human years. Indoor cats often age a little more slowly than outdoor cats because they face fewer daily risks.

Birds

How many human years is 1 bird year?+

It depends on the bird's size. As a general guide, one year equals about 15 to 20 human years for small birds such as budgies and canaries, around 10 to 12 for medium parrots, and roughly 5 human years for large parrots such as macaws.

How many human years is 1 parrot year?+

Parrot aging depends on size and lifespan. As a simple guide, one parrot year is about 10 to 12 human years for medium parrots and around 5 human years for large parrots such as macaws and African greys. Smaller birds convert higher, often around 15 to 20.

Small mammals

Why do small mammals age so quickly?+

Small mammals such as hamsters, mice, and rats have very high metabolic rates and reach maturity within months. This produces a rapid aging curve in the first year of life, equal to many human years.

How many human years is 1 hamster year?+

Hamsters have short lifespans, so their human year conversion is high. As a simple guide, one hamster year is about 25 human years, which means a one and a half year old hamster is roughly like a 37 to 38 year old human.

How many human years is 1 ferret year?+

A simple guide is that one ferret year equals about 10 to 12 human years. Ferrets age quickly early in life, so younger ferrets convert to more human years per year.

How many human years is 1 chinchilla year?+

On average, one chinchilla year equals about 10 to 12 human years. That means a three year old chinchilla is roughly comparable to a 30 to 36 year old human.

Reptiles and aquatic pets

Do reptiles age differently than mammals?+

Yes. Reptile aging is shaped by species, temperature, diet, and habitat. Tortoises age very slowly and may live over 100 years, while geckos and bearded dragons have shorter lifespans and faster aging.

How old is a gecko in human years?+

Most pet geckos age at a moderate rate. A simple guide is that one gecko year equals about 5 to 7 human years, depending on the species, care, and lifespan.

How old is a leopard gecko in human years?+

Leopard geckos typically live 10 to 20 years. A simple guide is that one leopard gecko year equals about 5 to 7 human years, so a five year old leopard gecko is roughly like a 25 to 35 year old human.

How many human years is 1 lizard year?+

It depends on the species. Lizards with shorter lifespans map to more human years per year. For example, many bearded dragons map to about 8 to 10 human years per year, while many geckos map to about 5 to 7.

How many human years is 1 snake year?+

Snake aging depends on the species and its typical lifespan. A simple guide is that one snake year equals about 3 to 6 human years, with faster aging early in life.

How many human years is 1 fish year?+

It depends on the fish. Long lived fish such as goldfish and koi may equal about 3 to 4 human years per year, while shorter lived fish such as bettas may equal about 10 to 12 human years per year.

How old is an axolotl in human years?+

Axolotls mature quickly but can live 10 to 15 years. A simple guide is that one axolotl year equals about 6 to 7 human years, so a five year old axolotl is similar to a 30 to 35 year old human.

Other animals

How many human years is 1 pig year?+

Pig aging depends on the breed and lifespan, but a practical guide for many domestic pigs is about 4 to 6 human years per pig year. Because pigs can live longer with good care, select Pig in the calculator for a closer estimate.

How many human years is 1 fox year?+

Fox aging varies by species. As a general guide, smaller foxes such as the fennec fox often map to about 7 to 8 human years per fox year, while larger species may age at a different rate.

Accuracy and safety

How accurate is the calculator?+

The calculator gives a research based estimate using veterinary lifespan data, species specific growth curves, and size or lifestyle adjustments. It is not as precise as a veterinarian's evaluation, but it offers a reliable comparison of your pet's age in human years.

Does lifestyle affect how pets age?+

Yes. Indoor pets generally age more slowly because they face fewer hazards. Diet, exercise, stress, and medical care all influence lifespan and aging speed, which is especially true for cats, birds, and exotic pets.

Is the conversion different for male and female pets?+

In general, sex does not cause a significant difference in aging rate. Spaying or neutering can influence lifespan for some species, but the effect on a human year conversion is small.
